ABSTRACT

This presentation provides a general introduction of integrity assessment of pressure piping structures such as oil and gas pipelines and piping systems in the power plant. Two general failure modes for the piping structure, i.e. net section plastic collapse and crack instability will be discussed, followed by brief introductions of failure assessment diagram (FAD), leak-before-break (LBB) assessment and pipe-whip analyses. Some related research topics regarding the fracture mechanics will be presented.

SHORT BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Yifan Huang is Stress Analyst at Component Integrity and Mechanical Engineering Department in Candu Energy Inc., Canada. His job is focused on fitness-for-service assessment of pressure piping system in power plants. Before joining Candu Energy Inc. in 2017, Dr. Huang obtained his Bachelor Degree (2011) in Civil Engineering from China University of Mining and Technology and graduated with MESc. (2013) and PhD (2016) degrees in Structural Engineering from University of Western Ontario. He then worked as a postdoctoral fellow in Carleton University and Simon Fraser University between 2016 and 2017. His primary area of research is fatigue and fracture mechanics and structural integrity assessment. Dr. Huang had published 11 papers in several well-known journals including Engineering Fracture Mechanics, Theoretical and Applied Fracture Mechanics, Fatigue and Fracture of Engineering Materials and Structures, International Journal of Pressure Vessels and Piping and Journal of Testing and Evaluation.
